Frequently Asked Questions

Below are listed a sampling of frequently asked questions.  If there are other questions that you may have and are not able to have them answered by the web site, please feel free to contact the office.

Q:   When should a child have his or her first dental visit?

A:   A child should have their first visit to the dentist at 3 years of age.  Many times, we suggest that the child come with their parent right before their 3rd birthday and watch their parent get their cleaning and check-up.  After the parent is finished with their appointment, we can have the child sit in the dental chair and take them for a “ride.”  We strive to make the first dental visit fun, informative, and non-threatening.  First time cleaning children get prizes and their picture taken.

Q:   Who needs to have their wisdom teeth removed?

A:    Wisdom teeth (third molars) have the potential to move front teeth as they try to erupt.  Untreated, they can also develop cysts and infections or damage adjacent teeth. For these reasons, we recommend routine evaluation of wisdom teeth beginning as early as 15 years of age.

Q:   If I have a missing tooth, what are my replacement options?

A:   Today, we have implants to replace missing teeth.  Implants are artificial titanium roots that are surgically placed into the jaw bone.  After healing, crowns are placed on top of the implant.  If implants are not practical or indicated, another option is a bridge that involves reducing the adjacent teeth to support the prosthesis.  The bridge is not removable by the patient as it is cemented in place.
Removable options include partial dentures, either with a metal substructure or a metal-free, flexible option.  Decisions on replacement are based on clinical findings and thorough discussion with your doctor.
